More than just relaxation Scottburgh promises to jam-pack your holiday with fun and entertainment.

Sardine run

Every year the South Coast experiences one of the wonders of nature. From July to August the great Sardine run can be expected when millions of these fish make their way up the coast. They are followed by thousands of game fish, sharks and dolphins. When they beach themselves frenzied activity takes place on the beach. This when experienced is something you will always remember.

Scuba Diving

At nearby Umkomaas lies the Aliwal Shoal. The reef is rated as one of the foremost dive sites in the world. The water is generally warm all year round and seldom drops below 20 degrees centigrade(celsius). Aliwal Shoal lies 5 km’s offshore just South of Umkomaas. The Shoal is a fossilised sand dune comprising a variety of sponges, soft and hard coral as well as a reef fish, turtles and rays. Divers looking for adventure can also dive between the ragged tooth shark (no cage).
Schools of dolphins and pods of whales are frequent visitors to the Shoal as well.

There are also two shipwrecks, which can contribute to great diving

There is “Nebo” a 2000 ton steamship that sunk on 20 may 1884 lying upside down 28 metres below sea level.

Then there is the “Produce” a Norwegian bulk carrier that sunk on 11 August 1974. The rusted framework is home to many species of fish making it an excellent dive. The bridge of the vessel is 12 metres under the surface with the ship on a sandbed approximately 35 metres below sea level.

Beaches

The main bathing beach is Scottburgh’s greatest asset and one of the best on the South Coast. The protected bay provides both swimmers and surfers with a gradual slope and perfectly formed waves. The main swimming beach has shark nets, life guards, saltwater swimming pool, supertube, miniature golf and a miniature train. There are umbrellas, deckchairs, surfboards and paddleski's to hire and the showers and toilets are kept clean.

Crocworld
Crocworld has become a major tourist venue on the South Coast . Nile crocodiles as well as alligators, African long-snouted and Dwarf crocodiles are displayed. Feeding takes place twice a day.

Aliwal Craft market

The Aliwal craft market takes place every first Sunday of the month on the banks of the Mpambanyoni river and offers doll-making, pottery, woodwork, food and many more on offer from the locals. During holidays more Sundays are added.

Green point lighthouse

The lighthouse is a national monument situated on a hill overlooking the dangerous Aliwal Shoal to warn ships.

Sezela sugarmill

It is one of the largest in the country and tours can be arranged by contacting the Scottburgh publicity association.
